Dear, All ColorOS SuperFans.

Today Discussion: How Smartphones Pop-Up Camera Works

Subject: Pop Up Camera Mechanism and its functions

Device Reference : Oppo F11 Pro, Reno & Reno 2

A truly Bezel-less phone calls for an innovative approach towards the front camera. It's not a thing OEMs can ignore or mount underneath the display. But it has been a struggle for all to put the camera. So Companies started realising that only cutting out the side panel is their only option to achieve it.

And the only remaining options are to either accommodate the sensor in a display cut out or to side with an out-of-the-box approach like a slider, pop-up or flip camera mechanism. And Oppo Find X was the one Wisdom finder for the lineup and followed by Oppo F11 Pro and now ever brands have one with them

Smartphones with a notch in their screens were a trend lately. Should it have been though? When notches were first introduced, they were thick and even after shrinking them to a water-drop form, they still looked ugly. Manufacturers did their best with these notches, they changed the sizes, positions and even tried punching holes through the displays! None succeeded at offering what we wanted – a truly edgeless display.

Thankfully though, what should have had happened two years ago is finally happening and Oppo has made it possible. The OppoF11 Pro is among the first phones to sport an edgeless screen but how did Oppomanage this? It's simple; they just hid the front camera inside the phone using the pop-up mechanism. So now we have a phone with a cleaner design and a front camera that pops up, only when you need it!

But since pop-up cameras are new and have moving parts, there is bound to be some scepticism. Is the pop-up camera reliable? Will it break, or will it stop working after a while? If these questions are your questions, we might have the answers to them.

The Oppo Reno pop up camera looks quite impressive and Oppo makes this happen using a stepper motor mechanism. A stepper mechanism is something most of us might have never heard of. Unlike other motors, a stepper motor can be controlled using software to give very precise instructions and motion. Such machines are typically used in high-tech robots and advanced engineering appliances due to its reliability and accuracy. A stepper motor can be quite large and fitting it on a phone must have been a challenge for Oppo, but they managed to do this successfully.

Oppo claims it can be used up to 100 times a day for 6 years, with emojis signifying selfie and the up/ down movement of the camera module. The caption is self-explanatory and indicates that the selfie camera can be used up to 100 times a day for at least six years. This is an impressive number considering six years is a long time for someone to hold on to their smartphones. Moreover, in the video, the company is seen playing a musical symphony in its entirety using the sound presets for the pop-up camera.

Our phones sometimes slip out of our hands plummeting to the ground and that is a terrifying moment, no doubt. The front and the back of the Oppo Reno is made up of Corning Gorilla Glass, making it quite sturdy and shatterproof. But, what if the phone falls with its pop-up camera out? Oppo has done something really smart it here. There is a fall detection feature that quickly retracts the camera to prevent any damage, hopefully before the phone meets earth. If fact, even if someone tries to forcefully push the camera inside, the camera automatically retracts inside the phone because of this safety mechanism.

The Oppo Reno pop-up camera is a welcomed feature because we finally get this gorgeous, edge-to-edge high-resolution screen that supports HDR and so much more. This changes the game entirely.  Oppo has clearly marked its presence in the history of the smartphone with technology and we are all here to witness more exciting furthermore.
