Hello ColorOS SuperFans! Today I have a fun article about selfie. Hope you all enjoy it!

FIRST, THE DEFINITION:
Selfie is a self taken photograph, usually taken by a digital camera/smartphone which is to be held in one hand by itself or with selfie stick. In spite of how many people are there in the selfie photo, the person who has taken the photo must be there holding the camera to be considered it as a selfie.

HISTORY:

If you believe that selfie is a modern trend, you my friend are clearly mistaken. Robert Cornelius who was a chemist, took the first ever selfie in 1839. The process of photography was slower then, so opened the lens, ran into position, stood there for a minute and closed the lens. Thus creating first portrait photo. Andy Warhol made art form of portraits in mid-1950s and from there they started to get more attention.

But what is the use of the selfies without the social media? First MySpace introduced profile pictures in 2006. But it was the rise of the FaceBook in 2009 which created the boom in selfie. As front cameras were rare, initially profile pictures needed to taken by friends. Front-facing camera was introduced in iPhone 4 in 2010. And now selfie has became an phenomenon. Once selfie became mainstream, many photography apps emerged, from which Instagram has risen to the top and still is. Use of filters from Instagram helped people tweak their selfies and motivate them to capture and post on social media.

In 2012, Snapchat introduced video selfies. Later, Instagram introduced Stories feature which showcased selfie videos. In 2014, selfie stick was invented which enabled us to hold mobile at more than arm's length, greatly increasing options to take selfies. At this time, phone manufactures started to realize the increasing importance of the front camera and began improving its megapixels and quality. Various facial expressions like duck-face, fish-face, the smize etc. are adopted by selfie takers through the years. And now occasional selfies have evolved into normal lifestyle impulse. Various events & tourist spots now have selfie booth/selfie zones, it's a must!

There are many anecdotal variations of selfies. Latest one is Apple's Slofies-slow motion selfies!

DO YOU KNOW?

• Space selfies: In 1966, Buzz Aldrin took the first ever selfie beyond Earth.

• Curiosity rover takes selfie at Mount Sharp, Mars

• Monkey selfie: macaque monkey took the selfies. There was a copyright dispute for the photo between nature photographer & newspaper.

• Women take more selfies than men, obviously!
• Selfies are especially favored by millennial. Average age of selfie-taker is 23.6.
• Selfie was "word of the year" by Oxford English Dictionary in 2013.
• 1/3 of the people retouch their selfies before posting them on social media.
• The photo app flips our image while taking a selfie. We're used to seeing our face in mirrors — which is why some selfies might appear strange to us if the photo app doesn't flip the image.
• Most people tilt their neck in selfies. Check your selfies for the proof!
• People born after 1980 will take an estimated 25000 selfies in their lifetime, that's a lot of selfies!

3 TIPS FOR BETTER SELFIES:

1) Selfies shouldn't be taken too close to your face. Hold your arm 1-2 inch farther than normal.
2) Selfies should have even lighting. Face should be lighted from the front & evenly.
3) Selfies should be centered.

DANGERS OF SELFIE:

• Self body image & low self esteem: obsessively changing profile pictures & using filters changes our perception of ourselves. It is putting so much stress on beauty standards that people want to look like their digital photos with large eyes & smooth skin, thus blurring line between reality & fantasy. This is especially pronounced by social media comparison with others. This may lead to eating disorders like anorexia. And sometimes to cosmetic surgery also. If you see photos of actress/models on Instagram, you'll find dermal fillers, botox, enlarged lips, smoothened nose, no scars/pigmentation/uneven tone, lifted jaws. This may lead to unfair comparison & depression. Apps like FaceTune, Snapchat etc. are thriving on such filters only.

• Injuries/death due to selfie: It is an unfortunate fact that India has the highest number of selfie deaths. Mean age of victim is only 23 years. The reasons were due to fall, drowning, vehicle accident, wild animal assault etc.

• Psychological problems: associated with selfie taking is addiction & obsessive-compulsion which leads to-
selfitis: "the obsessive compulsive desire to take photos of one’s self and post them on social media as a way to make up for the lack of self-esteem and to fill a gap in intimacy”

SELFIE ETIQUETTES:

• SAFETY FIRST.
• Don't over-do it on social media.
• Don't duck-face.
• Don't take selfie at funeral, natural disaster, accidents, voting booths or other inappropriate places, be respectful.
• Don't post nude/semi-nude ones. You can take it for private but don't post publicly. Same with intimate selfies.
• And lastly, don't take selfies too seriously.

Enjoy and take care!
