「ColorOS Fantasy」 Oppo A5 2020 Unboxing & First Impressions
Hello ColorOS SuperFans!
Recently I have recently won Oppo A5 2020 in the ColorOS 7 contest & thanks to admin @PiyushRana, I received it promptly.
This article is about my unboxing experience & first impressions. This mobile is being marketed as a midrange phone with features perfectly suited to its price point.
First, the box: standard white coloured, with A5's picture on the front.
Odd thing is that there is a sticker on the box showing [4 GB | 64 GB].
On the bottom & sides there are specifications & box contents are shown.
Felt proud that this phone is MADE IN INDIA. Also see the manufacturing date: 14/11/19! And I received it on 12/12/19!
Upon opening the box, inside we first see a box containing CLEAR CASE. As you can see that the cutouts for camera & fingerprint sensor is beveled. So we can easily locate fingerprint sensor. Also there is SIM eject tool, warranty & quick start booklets inside.
Below the case, there are 1. charger, 2. USB cable and 3. headphone. The charger is 5V-2A that's 10 watt.
Power cable is USB type C, future-proof. I have never used USB-C cable before, so the ease of plugging into phone without checking first is very nice. Still I think USB-C is a large socket unlike Apple's Lightening connector which is the best design-wise. The cable's second socket is USB-A which goes into the charger. I hope in the future, Oppo make USB-C plug from the charger.
Now-a-days most companies don't bother to give you headphone with the mobile. I was surprised to see a headphone inside the box. It'll come handy sometimes.
Now the phone: it is wrapped in plastic.
Upon removing the plastic, we can fully appreciate its beauty. On the front, there is factory fitted protector sheet. So there is no need to stick thick toughened glass for me, which I heavily despise.
On the back, there are quad-cam, fingerprint sensor & flash.
The top is bare.
On one side there is power button with green filling in it.
On the other side there are volume up & down buttons and SIM tray.
On the bottom, 3.5mm headphone jack, speakers & USB-C charging port.
Let's turn it on. After switching it on, welcome screen greets you and guides you to basic settings like language, wifi, Google id, password creation etc. My phone was about 40% battery and this is the first screen.
After personalization of phone, changing settings, installing apps I'll do some more testing & will come back with full review of all its features.
Phone specifications:
Dimensions: 163.6mm x 75.6mm x 9.1 mm. It is pretty big in size and feels substantial in my hands. Feels pretty solid.
Weight: 195 g. So heavy phone. You can feel it in your pocket.
Color: mirror black. I covered it by transparent case, so no big deal of mirror black finish. If you use it without cover, the finish is very reflective.
Operating System: ColorOS 6.0.1, based on Android 9. One update available soon after starting it. No ColorOS 7 beta available.
Processor: Snapdragon 665 octa-core. Feels fast while taking photos & routine use.
GPU: Adreno 610
Battery: 4880/5000mAh (Minimum/Typical). I personally feel that Android devices should have such battery capacity minimum.
RAM: 4GB LPDDR 4x
Storage: 64GB, available about 45GB
Display: Size: 16.5cm (6.5") LCD, 1600 x 720 pixels. Viewing from side at angle is not good. Waterdrop notch present. I hate any type of notch. This is not 1080 full HD display, but still I cannot see individual pixels (270 ppi) and less pixels means that text is larger in size which is benefit for my aging eyes and less usage of battery. So satisfactory for me. Though I would love OLED full HD and no notch display in my next phone.
Contrast: Typical value 1500:1
Brightness: Typical value 480 nits
Camera: Rear: 12MP primary + 8MP wide angle 119º + 2MP monochrome lens + 2MP portrait lens for depth information. Front: 8MP. NO Optical Image Stabilization.
Video: Front 1080P/720P@30fps and rear: upto 4K@30fps, 1080P@30fps, 720P@30fps
Connectivity, sensors etc. as per normal standards. No step counter/health features which are basically useless for me.
Missing but would be useful: Notification LED.
Face + fingerprint unlock present.
Release date: september 2019.
I have created a short 2 minute video of this unboxing. Please watch on YouTube.
