Hello ColorOS SuperFans,

INTRODUCTION

ColorOS 7 has the best collection of default apps to help with the usage of Oppo phones. Play Store has millions of third party apps developed for specific purposes. In this article, I'll show you the advantages of using default apps. And in the next article, I'll be discussing the case for using third party apps.

That said, there are some definite advantages of using stock apps and I wanted to highlight those reasons for a quick shout out.

HERE TODAY, HERE TOMORROW

How many weather apps have come and gone since you are using your Android phone? How many flashlight apps have disappeared since ColorOS has introduced built-in flash light?

The advantage of using default apps is that they generally have a longer life than third party apps. There are some apps like MX Player (launched in 2011) that were around since a long time and are still going strong, but that's not the general rule.

PREDICTABLE BUSINESS MODELS

The nice thing about something like Soloop or Oppo Relax app is that you know it’s going to be free forever.

The odds of Soloop/Oppo Relax switching to a paid app/in-app purchases next year is basically zero. Also, if you start using it today, it’s not like Oppo is going to release Soloop/Oppo Relax 2.0 in a few months and you’ll need to pay again to get the updates.

Oppo and third party developers have different business models, and each makes sense for each party. But from my point of view, the one business model that is more likely to stay the same for longer is more useful.

IT’S JUST PLAIN CHEAPER

CalcNote Pro, 330 Rs.
ColorOS Calculator, free forever

FiLMiC Pro, 1050 Rs.
ColorOS Camera app, free forever

X-plore File Manager, in-app purchases upto 1280 Rs.
ColorOS File Manager, free forever

So even though there are some powerful features in those apps, most people don't use all the features. Also there’s no getting around the fact that since the cost of developing ColorOS apps is absorbed by the income Oppo gets from hardware sales, Calculator/Camera/File Manager apps are able to be free to the user. If you use all the advanced features these third party apps provide, than only the cost is justified.

KEEPING UP WITH NEW OS FEATURES

Did your favorite third party photo manager, email client, calculator, note taker, web browser, camera app, music/video player or calendar app got dark mode? If you used all default apps, the answer is yes! If you used third party apps, then the answer is likely no, not all of them.

Even not all Google apps get all the latest features timely.

PREDICTABLE PRIVACY

Is your downloaded new browser, just for example, Opera, selling your browsing data to advertisers? Does the photo editing app, just for example, PicsArt send your pics to the server for processing? Why does the new file sharing app requires access to your contacts? Do you trust putting personal information in your notes app? What if those apps are acquired by a company you don't trust tomorrow?

default (12).jpg

By using the ColorOS ecosystem, you probably trust Oppo more than most companies. Again, Oppo business model is selling you hardware and not selling your data for profit. Lots of third parties are excellent here too, but you really have to check for each one if you want to be sure.

CONCLUSION

Look, my Phone is having some third party apps. For me, the benefits they allow provide me value, but there is definitely a strong case to be made that it’s safest and cheapest to use default apps unless you have a good reason not to do so.
