Hello My ColorOS Family,

PicsArt_08-08-11.48.59.jpg

We recently celebrated this amazing festival of love and care, the festival for Siblings. That is Raksha Bandhan. In this year 2020, this festival was celebrated on 3rd of the August. So, I decided to write a thread on it and share the amazing pictures that I shot on my OPPO F5 (◠‿◕)

About Raksha Bandhan

Raksha Bandhan is a festival that has got its origin many many years ago. Right from the time of Mahabharata.
The term Raksha in Sanskrit literally means " Protection ". So this festival is all about the promise of protection.
In sindhi, we call the Raksha Bandhan as "Rakhri".

This festival comes in the months of Shraavan month of Hindu Calender (basically in august) and the date varies every year. It is celebrated all over India.
In this festival, Sisters tie rakhi (a sacred thread) onto the wrist of their brothers. In turn, they give their sisters a gift or some money and promise to protect their sisters life long.
Some girls also tie rakhi to their Bhabhi (Brother's Wife), this custom is carried out because a Bhabhi is also responsible for the protection and well-being of the whole family.

History behind RAKSHA BANDHAN.
From all these years, I have been listening to the tales and history behind the festival Raksha Bandhan, and I would really love to share it with you all the readers.
My mumma has told me this story many times that I now know some details about it, so here it goes ~

According to Hindu Mythology,
The origin of Raksha bandhan came from the Mahabharata. It was when Lord Shree Krishna was with war with the Devil King Shishupal, and our saviour Lord Krishna killed the Devil king. Because of this battle, Lord Shree Krishna was hurt and his finger was bleeding heavily.
And at that time, Draupadhi came. Who was the wife of 5 Brothers 'Pandavas' . Draupadhi couldn't see Lord Shree Krishna bleeding, She quickly tore a piece of her Saaree and wrapped it onto the hand of Shree Krishna. This Compassion and Love from Draupadhi made Shree Krishna emotional and in debt.
Shree Krishna felt loved by the sisterly love of Draupadhi and in that moment, he took a pledge to always protect Draupadhi from troubles, and see her as his Sister.

It was from that moment that Raksha Bandhan came into existence. It was from that moment that Lord Shree Krishna protected her Sister Draupadhi from all the troubles and difficult situations, that he took care of her dignity and respect.

How Raksha Bandhan is Celebrated

Buying of Rakhi
Before the Raksha Bandhan arrives, sisters take out the time to go buy the rakhi for their brothers, OR make the rakhi with their own hands.
The rakhi is made of colourful thread, mostly from the silk or the cotton threads. And the beads or diamonds are setted in the middle to add the glamour.

Preparation of Sweets
The sweets are either prepared at home or bought from market. Sweets all the varieties from chocolates to modaks. The most widely used sweets for raksha bandhan are Modaks, Kaju Katlis, Dry Fruits and Cadbury Celebrations Pack.

New Outfits
A new outfit is to be worn at this auspicious day. Preferably Traditonal attire. It is for all the family members.

Making the Aarti ki Thaali
Aarti ki thaali is preprared. This thaali includes -

Diya  (Lamp),
Haldi  (Turmeric),
Kumkum  (A red powder, made from saffron or turmeric),
Chawal ke daane  (Rice Grains)
Mithaai  (Sweets)
Rakhi

Performing the Rituals
Moharat (A particular given time known to be the most fortunate time) is followed for performing the rituals.
These rituals are performed wearing new clothes in presense of the family, to gather their blessigns as well.
Sisters keep the fast untill the rituals are performed and that is why it is celebrated early in the day.
The Brother sits down and the sister takes an aarti of the brother, she then puts the tilak on brother's forehead and they feed each other the sweets and dry fruits.
After this, the rakhi has to be tied by the sister to her brother and the gift is been given to the sister.

How was Raksha Bandhan celebrated in Lockdown?

I saw and heard many experiences of this. If the brothers and sisters were living many stations away from each other, then the rakhis and sweets were bought from Online websites and Instagram Stores and were directly shipped to the brother's address.
Siblings were also video calling each other while performing the rituals. Sisters were also sending the masks and sanitizers to the brothers as a sign of blessings.
