The greatness of a culture can be found in its festivals. - Siddharth Katragadda

Hello My ColorOS Family,

India is a land which is highly diverse with its culture, traditions and festivals. And ofcourse this thread is going to be about India's another amazing festival, that is "TEEJ". There is not just one type of teej but a few types, but each of them have the same origin and history to it. So let's get to knowing about the Sindhi Teej and how I celebrated it.

About Teej

The festival Teej is celebrated for the Union of Goddess Parvati and Lord Shiva. It has its origin derived from Hindu Mythology. It is very similar to Karwa Chauth.
In sindhi we call it "Teejri" or "Teejdi"..
The word 'Teej' literally means 'third' and is usually the third day after full moon or new moon night. Therefore, it is celebrated on the advent of monsoons on the third day after the full moon or new moon night.

This festival comes in the months of Shraavan month of Hindu Calender (basically in august) and the date varies every year.
In this festival, the married women keep fast for their husbands, while unmarried young girls can also keep fast to receive good marital bliss.

Applying Henna is a necessary part of this festival.
We shall move ahead to get knowing the origin of the festival Teej.

Origin of the Festival Teej

According to Hindu Mythology,
It is to be said that Goddess Parvati observed fasts for hundreds of years to make Lord Shiva happy to marry her. It is said that she took 108 births and rebirths to finally make Lord Shiva happy to marry her. It was then that Lord Shiva agreed to fullfil her wish and accepted her dedication and Married her.
Goddess Parvati then told the other women about this fast for its prosperity in married life and hence teej came into its existence.

How Teej is celebrated?

Following are all of the Teejdi Rituals ~

Asur - Before the fasting begins, we ladies usually wake up at around 4 am for this ritual called 'Asur'.
At this time, we brush our teeth with Daatun  and eat something to fill up our stomach a little bit, Since we have to keep the fast whole day.
Popular asur food to have are - Rabdi, Pis, Lola, Koki, and any other filling foods.
We then go back to sleep and wake up later in the morning.

Tulsi Pooja - After waking up later in the morning, we first get a bath to do the Tulsi Pooja and after that we can have water for the rest of the day. (One can keep waterless fast as well if wished so).
Tulsi Pooja is just about offering the aarti to the Tulsi plant with some Agarbathis (incense sticks) and then watering the plant with Sugared Water.

Applying Henna - Rest of the day goes by smoothly where we apply Mehendi (henna) on our hands with pretty and intricate designs.
If someone dislikes mehendi then they can just put a dot of it on the hands, because applying henna is considered good luck for the future.

Argh - In the Evening we cook Argh for the moon. Argh is made with mixing Cooked rice in the raw milk and adding sugar to it. Yes it tastes so yummy!
Argh is just made in advance for later rituals.

Getting Ready - We usually buy new clothes for this festival, Indian traditional clothes are given preference. However, older ladies prefer wearing Sindhi Suits. The outfit worn are bright in colour and jewellary is also worn to bring out the glow in our Faces.

Teejdi Katha - After all the chores and getting ready, ladies have to listen to the Teejdi katha (A tale) and collect the prasad, this brings us closer to breaking the fast. The katha can be said at home by the eldest woman of the house, or we can also go at a gathering or temples to hear it. After listening the katha, we collect the prasad (usually cucumber and flour) and bring it home and wait for the moonrise to break our fast.

Moonrise - Then we patiently wait for the moonrise. At the moonrise, we offer Argh to the moon 3 times and say our prayers and finally break our fast by drinking water and prasad and argh.
We can then eat whatever the dinner is and that's how teejdi fast is ended.

How was Teej celebrated in Lockdown?

Everything was the same, all rituals were performed the same way except 2 of them. When applying henna, instead of going to get it done from henna designers, we applied it at home by ourselves.

And other ritual that was performed differently is listening to the katha. Instead of going to some gathering, we heard the tale at home by ourselves with the help of YouTube.

And I will wrap up my article on Teej right here, and I will be back with another article soon.

I would thank @Amit_T  for being an awesome mentor.
