Hello ColorOS SuperFans,
INTRODUCTION
After last month's ColorOS update, I noticed a new icon called "Nearby Share" in the notification shade. As we all know that "Oppo Share" is an easy way to share files between Oppo Realme and Xaomi devices, I was surprised to see another sharing option called "Nearby Share". So after some research, I found out that it is a new feature rolled out by Google for file sharing for Android 6.0+ devices.
Here is my experience using this feature.
WHAT IS "NEARBY SHARE"?
It is is a feature very similar to the "Oppo Share" feature but it is built right into the Android 6.0+. And it works with any Android device.
It's a peer-to-peer file transfer system using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi allowing you to share files even when you are fully offline.
I have Oppo Reno 3 Pro mobile and infinix mobile and I want to share a photo between these two devices. Obviously "Oppo Share" will not work here. So let's use "Nearby Share" feature.
Upon touching the icon in the notification shade, you will come across this dialogue box for turning on "Nearby Share".
As you can see, this feature requires turning on bluetooth, location and Wi-Fi.
So after turning them on here is how it looks.
On my Oppo phone I opened an image and press share button.
Touch the "Nearby Share" icon.
Here is how the mobile is looking for nearby devices.
The device is found!
Let's share it!
On the receiving mobile, this pop up comes. It shows the sender device name, file name and secure connection ID. You need to accept the request to receive the file.
That's it! The file is saved in the Download folder.
In "Nearby Share", there are some settings: you can change the device name, you can set your device visibility to hidden or contacts only.
CONCLUSION
• "Nearby Share" is an easy-to-use feature for transferring files between any two Android mobile phones. "Oppo Share" is the feature which works only on Oppo, Realme and Xaomi phones while "Nearby Share" feature works on all Android devices.
• I am also surprised that it took Google so long to implement this feature in the Android.
In the next article, I'll be comparing "Oppo Share" with "Nearby Share" discussing pros & cons of each of them.
